I went with 3/16" sides and 1/4" bottom. I added a rib in center to prevent oil canning. The canoe oil caned pretty good on first outing. I think you could go with 3/16" ply for the whole canoe with maby 3 ribs. If you glass inside and out no problem. Mine is only glassed on outside and taped seams on inside. I also cut 1" off the freeboard after i had it glassed up I think it looks better that way. I can e-mail picture of rib if you like.

I hate to say this but for lighter weight all of my boats are made with 1/8 th inch wood but glassed all the way around.

The one canoe, a Peterborough , I made that way went down an Arkansas white river on a week long trip without any damage. I went involuntarily swimming in the river  and like the canoe did not suffer any damage, just embarrassment, me more then the canoe who stayed with me.

I thought I would post this as a ........For what it is worth comment on the construction of wood boats.
Now a lot depends on the paddlers skill and consideration for there craft when on the water and even when you are off it.

I would NOT suggest for anyone trying to build one from 1/8 th inch wood till after you build one with the recommended thickness of wood....... The thinner wood is harder to work with.

Chuck.
PS.. I have been paddling and respecting boats for over 50 years.

I second Chuck's recommendation to go with the recommendations of your designer. I also second his enthusiasm for 1/8" plywood. My boats have panels no wider than 8"; I glass inside and out; and they are about as stout as if made of 1/8" steel boilerplate. Seriously.

I paddle and DISrespect my boats. They are a tool to get me into the outback and home again. If rocks are there, that's the way it goes. If beaver dams, logs, dry stream beds, etc. are there, that's the way it goes. I don't baby my boats. I can sand them down and brush on another layer of epoxy over- if needed - the winter.

Not all paddlers agree with me. I may not agree with me once in a while too.

Thanks guys. We won't be doing any whitewater however it really never crossed my mind to use 1/8 - stingy but not very adventurous. Maybe I'll go with Matt's option 2, which is what Baneo did. I'll keep the original freeboard though since I expect we'll want to fill it to capacity.

I just hope I can do a good job with the inside.
