If he does it like some of the folks around here do ... the end of the line is frayed so all the fibers are every which way. When the gar bites it the fibers wrap around the teeth and they are caught. Think of the end of the rope being like the buck tail on a jig , all fluffy and loose.

The downside of rope lures is if he breaks your line he is going to slowly die of starvation. Once the gars teeth are tangled it is heck to clear the rope.

That's how. never had that much trouble getting them loose, but it can be difficult.

Awesome fish. Wish I could get some of that action around here. We don't have a very large population of alligator gar. Ours are mostly spotted gar and needle nose(if those aren't the same fish).

Hmmm. They don't look much the same. What I call needle-nose has a very narrow "snout" - maybe only 2 inches wide. They don't actually look like an alligator like what I call an alligator gar.
