Hey guys I've never used a yoke before, just battens. My question is what is a yoke and what is it's purpose?

You install it at the balance point of the canoe, and then perhaps just an inch forward of the point, and you use it to carry your canoe on your shoulder when you need to transport it.

After you carry it a ways, much of the "awesome" part goes a way. Ache and pain begin to replace it. Padding helps; it delays the pain factor for probably another 40 to 50 feet.

Yoke at as a Thwart

I installed a yoke in my Swamp Girl to pull double duty as a thwart to span the width of the canoe at the center to help keep the sides of the boat flexing from the "oil can" effect.
