Bright wood stains or Dyes?

Post by AlohaDan »

I'm trying to work up a color scheme.

May be to ambitious, but figured UH going to Sugar Bowl last season needs some long term support.

So I'm looking for rainbow colors. Brighter red, yellow, green, blue.

I know from reading here that water based stains should be used early in the game.

I'll put graphite on the bottom so not worried about anything there. Looking for upper hull & deck colors. Will use West Systems 207 to let color in stained/dyed wood come through.

But most brands I have found on the net are meant to give you tree like colors. Maple, walnut, etc

Are there any out there that would give me what I am looking for? What about wood dyes? are they usable? Available?

I'd rather not paint to save weight. Going to try to keep the boat as light as possible.

If I have too would settle for a bright yellow and a dark green stains..

Or will I have to settle for adding a color additive to the epoxy?

Aloha

The biggest risk with adding pigment to epoxy is that you have to get the same ratio/tint consistently each time you mix a batch.

Using the water-based stain under epoxy is the safest bet. The only clear epoxy I've used is from http://www.epoxyproducts.com/.

There might be other out there with no tint.

But I try some different stains with amber-tinted epoxy on some scrap wood. You might like the results.

Bingo. What the right words will do for Google search.

Be sure to check on the various data sheets also.

Going to try Homestead Dry dyes as UV protection will go over West 270.

Good hunting.

Biggest thing is to test what you want to do on a scrap piece. Doesn't UH have a logo or pattern on the legs of their uniforms? That would look pretty cool on a yak.

Matt you want me to do those bands? Gad I'll be forever.

But I might be able to find some cloth with the bands on them. em.. might work.

Over here OC-1 builders overlay a pattern you might pick up in a store with the final jell coat.

Have any of your guys done that?

I'm thinking when I dye (after testing) I'll restrict one color to a panel. Unless I can experiment and find a way to bleed the colors. Then a real rainbow becomes possible.

Mahalo. Your info looks pretty much similar to what I finally stumbled on.
