Tandem Kayak.

Post by rodot »

For some time I have been itching to build a second kayak. The Department of Finance, aka, She who must be obeyed, has advised however that funds will only be made available on the proviso that the next craft is a "two seater".

I do enjoy the company of my wife, but I realise that the majority of the paddling will be done by me. I am seeking advice there fore on a suitable tandem or kayak capable of carrying an x kilogram load in an upright manner. We have plans to join the grey nomads for a few months, and would like a craft to take with us on an extended caravanning trip around Oz.

The short list includes the Mako, when it is listed. It's sure to be a great boat, but, perhaps a tad too long for my requirements. Also the Northwind and Southwind with extended cockpits look promising. I am leaning towards the 18 ft Freedom with an extended cockpit however. If Matt could draw it up as a stripper it would look terrific and I'd love to have a go at a stripper

Any advice or opinions would be most welcome.

Regards Roger.

20' would be big for a single. 18' is up there but manageable if you accept it'll be a bit less nimble than a 16-17' boat.

A Strip Freedom 18 cold be doable.

Not if you sit in the back where she can't see you

The more I keep looking at it, I keep coming back to the Northwind. I just love the whole concept of that boat and surely I could squeeze the missus in for the occassional short paddle. Besides that, I am looking forward to a bit of a challenge with the build.
