Zeb, my observation is:When you build a boat with a kid, you are ACTUALLY building a kid with a boat. Keep that little girl protected ahnd happy.

In four days, my 6 year old Granddaughter and I leave for a week long trip on Michigan's Au Sable River. She wants to "Paddle my own canoe, Grandpa!" So, along the way, she'll be doing some paddling.

Gary & Joanie McGuffin, and their Daughter Seela, canoe all the time. (The girls play together at our Quiet Water Symposium at Michigan State University each spring.) Joanie advises me to let Katie take along one toy of her choice. Then, she can also have fresh sand, sticks, and stones in the front of the canoe every day.

Great Fun :D when we got to the stage in above pictures I asked her what She thought and Ellie looked at me and said "wont the water come over the sides"  As We hadent made the temp frames i had to hold the side panels around the bottom panels to show her the finished height!!!
jack, i hope(know) You and Katie enjoy your trip, the smiles on both of your faces will be priceless as She" paddles her own boat granpa"
Keep safe and happy on your adventure.
All the Best

Zeb,

Best thing you can do is build a boat with your kid. My dad did it with me his dad did it with him and I did it with my son. My son and I designed and built a boat when he was 14. We call it the Banoe it has taken us on many camping and fishing trips. Getting your kids involved in the outdoors and nature gives them a love for nature. Building a boat for them teaches them responsibility and gives them a sence of accomplishment. They look at it and think--- I can't believe I built it---- It's mine--- I better take care of it. Just make sure they get to do some of the work. My son at 21 still tells me about the weep holes he cut wrong on the Banoe but you know i think some how he is proud of those weep holes.

Katie was only three when I built the boat, so she wasn't a lot of help. We did draw around our palm prints in the boat, put in our names and the date. Here is the presentation sheet that I epoxied into the inside of the boat:

the Katie Bug

This craft was built in East Lansing MI in 2002 & 03, by a loving Grandpa (Jack Voss, “Poppa”) for a bright eyed, intelligent Granddaughter (Kayla Elisabeth Duby, “Katie”).

Katie, may you enjoy using this boat while paddling in the outback, traveling far waters, camping on distant shores, seeing, listening, and learning with Mother Nature. I urge you to observe the stars and galaxies; to watch animals as they live; and to learn about plants. The outdoors is the best place in the world. Make it part of you and your Life.

Seek and earn friends. Learn whom to trust and for what they may and may not be trusted - and whom to not trust. Observe the works of man, and seek to understand them for yourself. Observe the creations of God, and seek to understand them within yourself. Know yourself, and to your own self be true.

I present you with this vessel, and with my love for you.
Your loving Poppa.
