Computer Croaked!

Post by FlaMike »

I will only be on-line occasionally for a while, my hard drive is now toast!

Two big regrets, no back-up of my email address book, and no back-up of my Favorite's list. The loss of the latter is a biggie! I had a lot of research in that one.

Learn from my mistakes! Everyone says you should back stuff up from time to time, but who really does? If you haven't, I'd do so.

Once I get things sorted out, I'll be back!

I can't emphasize enough how important it is to back up your files. I had a melt down a couple years ago. Luckily, I was backed up about 85%. But I had to redraw several files.

It very easy to set up you files for easy back up. Just have them stored in one main folded. Divide that folder in subfolders if needed.

Get yourself an external, portable USB hard drive with enclosure. Example: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications ... CatId=2422

All you do is plug it in and turn it on. Using Windows Explorer or My Computer, find your main folder and select it. Edit: copy. Then Edit: paste into folder created by the portable hard drive.

It's just like copying a folder from one area of your computer to another. There are many other solutions to back up your files. But it doesn't get much easier than that.

You could even use something like http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications ... No=3283217. Just don't lose that little bugger.

Computers are great when they work but really suck when they don't and they are NOT reliable. Count on them to fail on you.

My first post in this thread was made on my wife's computer. After multiple attempts, I was able to get mine to boot up again. This is definitely a hardware problem.

As soon as it came up, I did get both my address book and Fav. list copied to a CD. Since it is still running, I'm going to copy a few other things to CD, and maybe try uploading the rest to an on-line file storage site.

It may be that all I need is a new hard drive.

There are many ways to keep back ups, including on-line services, but one fairly inexpensive way is to use an external hard drive. I just got my hands on an interesting version, it's just a case with a USB connector that you can put just about any hard drive in. A bare-bones hard drive can be picked up pretty cheap now, and with a case that you can pop one in and out of will let you keep several for mass storage.

Got to work on this some more, so off I go . . .

That's what I have and attempted to explain above. It's really easier. Probably easier than the way I described it.

It's very nice, easy, and cheap considering the cost of paying some to try and extract what you lost.

Well, it died again. I'll keep that drive and try my hand at "data recovery" when I get my new computer. Professional data recovery often starts out at $800!

I'm using the Blackberry for email and to post this, and can sometimes use my wife's computer, too.

Might have a new by tomorrow!
