Attaching them there Gunwales?

Post by Tor »

I've read a lot of comments about whether the gunwales should have a wood on wood bond or whether it's ok to stick em to the glass.

I'm sure I'm going to get another set of differing opnions but as I see it if your glass delaminates you didn't do a very good job in the first place. Is this too simplified?

I'm a way off this stage yet but is good to think ahead.

thanks,

Tor

Matt recommends wood on wood for this and I think he is right.

Having said that, I haven't bothered to much about it.

Your boat is much bigger than anything I have built so I would suggest you go with what the designer recommends.

Tor,

You're line of thinking is correct. Getting wood-on-wood is the safest bet. But not a necessity.

Tor,
I saw guys using those PVC clamps for putting the gunwhales on, so I made some out of a left over piece I had.

I highly recommend them to anyone who doesn't want to lay out the money for store-bought spring clamps. They really do a nice job of applying just the right amount of pressure without starving the joint of epoxy.
