Touring Pirogue vs. Touring Pirogue-T

Post by lpm »

Looking to build me first boat, and really like the looks of these two pirogues, especially the Touring Pirogue-T.

2 Questions

1) Is, is the tumblehome sides a bit too advanced for a 1st build?

If not, then:

2) What might be the difference in cost to build the Touring-T over just the Touring?

I think Texas River Rat can give you a pretty acurate break-down on building one of these. I think Hairymick may have built one without the tumblehome. I would heed any advice these two may give you. They're entering "Doctorate" level in boat building as far as I'm concerned.

The cost is going to be about the same except for one extra sheet of ply.

As far as builder skill, it's a little more advanced especially when it comes to the gunwales. Hard to say if it's too hard for a beginner. Someone hwo is patient and is thorough about following directions, then it would be ok.

G'day 1pm and welcome aboard mate! :D

I built the prototype Touring Pirogue and an early prototype version of its sister with the tumblehome. Both are superb boats 8)

First time build, I would recommend the Touring Pirogue. It is way easier to build and to fibreglass.

If I could only ever build one boat, the Touring Pirogue would be it.
Regards,
Mick

Thanks guys, just the info I needed. I really like the look and concept of the Touring-T, just not so sure I've got the needed patience to give that design the justice it deserves, at least not right now.

So, plans for the Touring Pirogue just ordered. Guess the next step is locating the plywood and gathering the tools and other materials.

I built the Touring Pirogue-T as my first build and am very happy with it. I just got in from paddling it around the lake for a while. The gunnels are a bit of trouble and trying to fiberglass the inside of the ends is a pain (if I had it to do over again, I would do it in strips), but it can be done as a first build. I really like having the tumblehome panels when paddling and I like the look with them.
